The SDA Union welcomes the Victorian Government’s decision to fast-track a ban on machetes, following the violent incident at Northland Shopping Centre.
This decision is a critical first step in addressing the rising threat of customer violence and weapon-related incidents in retail spaces.
“The shocking scenes at Northland are a reminder that frontline retail workers are at real risk as they go about their business,” said SDA Victorian Secretary Michael Donovan.
The SDA is calling on the Government to go further by requiring retailers to secure all bladed items, including kitchen knives, in the same way that cigarettes and expensive alcohol are locked away.
“In March, the SDA wrote to the Premier requesting this very action, and we reiterate that call today,” Secretary Donovan said.
The union is also urging shopping centre operators and police to increase security and visibility to help safeguard workers and customers.
