I was rapt to have my first job! Soon after that, I joined the SDA to make sure I was protected at work! My mum told me, “you never know what can happen and you should always be protected”. About six months later, I was working an understaffed shift and being made to rush various tasks. One task was to empty the fry basket which was overfilled. I went to lift it and was seriously injured. 20 months later, I still can't work. I have had K-wire insertion surgery, K-wire removal surgery (because it went walk about), Sesanoid arthrodesis surgery, and and metacarphalangeal joint fusion surgery. I still have one operation to go to remove all the bolts and wires from my arm, and fortunately I am finally on the mend. I'm so lucky that I was in the Union and that I knew the steps to take when reporting the injury, namely calling the union  putting in an incident report, and  going to see my own doctor. Without the Union and Mum, I would have been completely lost. If I didn't do all the important steps I would have missed out on WorkCover and wouldn't have been able to afford all the operations. It's taken a big toll on my schooling, but at least I have been able to get everything fixed up.
