Help Keep Christmas Day a Public Holiday

Send your Email to the Victorian Government

Last year Christmas Day fell on a Sunday.  It was a public holiday in every State and Territory of Australia except Victoria.  Under the Victorian Public Holidays Act it was not a public holiday in Victoria.

After intensive lobbying by the SDA the Victorian Government declared Christmas Day a public holiday in 2016.

This situation will arise again in 2021 and 2022.  The SDA wants it fixed permanently by legislation ensuring Christmas Day is always a public holiday when it falls on Saturday or a Sunday.

The Victorian Labor Government wants to legislate for this.  It has arranged for a “Regulatory Impact Statement” on the proposal as required by law.

The Regulatory Impact Statement asks for public comment as follows:

  • Do you believe the social benefits of observing Christmas Day as a public holiday (when it falls on a Saturday/Sunday) outweigh the associated cost?

The Government wants to know your views.
