Last year Christmas Day fell on a Sunday. It was a public holiday in every State and Territory of Australia except Victoria. Under the Victorian Public Holidays Act it was not a public holiday in Victoria.
After intensive lobbying by the SDA the Victorian Government declared Christmas Day a public holiday in 2016.
This situation will arise again in 2021 and 2022. The SDA wants it fixed permanently by legislation ensuring Christmas Day is always a public holiday when it falls on Saturday or a Sunday.
The Victorian Labor Government wants to legislate for this. It has arranged for a “Regulatory Impact Statement” on the proposal as required by law.
The Regulatory Impact Statement asks for public comment as follows:
- Do you believe the social benefits of observing Christmas Day as a public holiday (when it falls on a Saturday/Sunday) outweigh the associated cost?
The Government wants to know your views.
We urge SDA members to tell the Victorian Government the importance of Christmas Day to you and that the benefits outweigh the costs. A few short lines is sufficient.
