Free and Safe Parking Campaign Update

We began our campaign for free and safe parking for retail and fast food workers in the second half of last year. Unfortunately, the management at many shopping centres have refused to listen to workers and the broader community, and continue to charge for car parking.

The SDA has been exploring other ways to remove the car parking fees for staff.

We have met with Premier Daniel Andrews and lobbied him on this issue.

Recently at the Victorian Labor Party Conference, the SDA successfully pushed for free and safe parking to be part of the Party’s platform going into the state election in November this year.

Our successful amendment states that Labor will “legislate under planning or other laws for free parking for employees during their shifts in shopping centres with car parking and request WorkSafe Victoria to develop standards for safety in shopping centre car parks for employees who work at shopping centres.”

This is a major step forward in our campaign for free and safe parking for retail and fast food workers, and means that if a Labor Government is re-elected in Victoria we have a chance to change the law and improve the lives of thousands of workers across our state.

We have experienced a great amount of community support for our campaign for free and safe parking for retail and fast food workers. Thank you to the almost 4000 people that have signed our petition, and to all those who came to our rallies. Thank you to Labor MP Tim Richardson who has worked with us closely on this issue, and advocated for retail and fast food workers in Parliament.

We will keep you updated as our campaign moves forward.

Thank you for your continued support.
